English Language Development
At John Muir Middle School, our English Language Development (ELD) program is designed to support students who are classified as English Learners (ELs). Our goal is to accelerate English language acquisition while ensuring students achieve academic success across all core subjects.
The ELD program focuses on building language and literacy through the four key domains of communication:
-
Reading – Developing comprehension skills and strategies to access grade-level texts.
-
Writing – Strengthening the ability to communicate ideas clearly, using correct grammar and vocabulary.
-
Listening – Enhancing understanding of spoken English in academic and social contexts.
-
Speaking – Building confidence to express thoughts effectively and participate fully in classroom discussions.
Our instruction is guided by the California English Language Development (ELD) Standards, which provide a framework for increasing English proficiency while supporting success in content areas. Students are regularly assessed using the ELPAC (English Language Proficiency Assessments for California) to monitor growth in all four language domains and to help guide instruction. Reclassification as Fluent English Proficient is a top priority, ensuring students are ready to engage fully in mainstream classroom learning.
Through our ELD program, John Muir Wildcats develop the skills, confidence, and perseverance—living Wildcat PRIDE—needed to thrive academically, socially, and beyond.
If you have any questions about ELD services or student support, our dedicated staff is always available to help.
