JMMS Athletics

The athletics program at John Muir Middle School is a great medium for student development physically, emotionally, and socially. We encourage all students to take part in a sport that will not only improve their overall health but will teach them vital social skills that will translate into success in everyday life.

Athletics Policy

Athletics at John Muir Middle School

At John Muir Middle School, we believe athletics are more than just sports—they are an extension of our classroom and a privilege that reflects the values of Wildcat PRIDE: Patience, Respect, Integrity, Dependability, and Empathy. Participation in our athletics program builds teamwork, discipline, leadership, and school spirit, while also holding students to the highest academic and behavioral expectations.

Eligibility Requirements
To ensure our student-athletes are thriving both on the field and in the classroom, our staff reviews each student’s report card to determine eligibility.

  • A GPA of 2.0 or higher is required to participate.

  • Students must maintain a “C” or better in P.E. to remain eligible.

  • Sixth graders are eligible to begin participation and remain eligible based on their first quarter grades.

  • Seventh and eighth graders qualify for eligibility based on the final report card from the prior school year.

  • Once deemed eligible, students must also complete an approved waiver form or physical examination before joining a team.

Behavior and Commitment
Athletics at JMMS require more than skill—they demand character. Students and parents are required to sign an Athletics, Academics, and Behavior Contract to ensure athletes represent our school with integrity and respect. Good behavior is vital both on and off the field, and athletes are expected to demonstrate dependability and empathy in how they treat teammates, coaches, officials, and opponents.

Attendance Requirement
On game and tryout days, students must attend school for the entire day to participate. The only exceptions are absences cleared with a doctor’s note or an administrative decision regarding a valid excuse. This expectation reinforces our belief that academics always come first and dependability is at the heart of being a Wildcat.

Detention

If a student is put on detention, the detention takes precedence over games and practices. Students who attend their detention are deemed eligible to play, if time permits, if transportation is available, and if the coach is in agreement.

Suspension

Suspension of a student athlete, for any reason, will render that student ineligible or removed from the team for one week per every day of suspension. For example, if a student athlete is suspended for two days, he/she may not participate in games or travel with the team for two weeks. We leave the participation of training and practices at the discretion of the coach. During their suspension period, student athletes may not participate or attend any school sporting event anywhere or at any time.

Coaches may also remove students from a sport at any time. The coach decides the play time and position of the students, and it is his/her decision to deem a student eligible or not. The athletics director is available to schedule events, enforce safety, provide equipment, and ensure that all student athletes and coaches adhere to all rules.

Wildcat Sports

John Muir Middle School offers a strong athletics program that gives students opportunities to compete, grow, and lead. Each sport emphasizes not only skill and competition but also the lifelong lessons that come from teamwork and responsibility.

  • Track & Field – Highlights both individual excellence and team spirit, reinforcing responsibility, effort, and resilience.

  • Cheer – Showcases school pride, leadership, and empathy through encouragement, teamwork, and positive representation at events.

Wildcats Compete with PRIDE

Every time a Wildcat steps onto the field, the court, the mat, or the track, they carry more than just a jersey—they carry the spirit of John Muir Middle School. Athletics at JMMS are about striving for excellence while showing patience in growth, respect for others, integrity in competition, dependability as teammates, and empathy as community members.

Our athletes are not only preparing to win games—they are preparing to win in life. With Wildcat PRIDE guiding every step, our students compete with courage, lead with honor, and inspire others through their actions. Once a Wildcat, always a Wildcat!
